Vivek once fasted for 48 days praying for Ajith’s recovery

It turns out that comedian Vivek, whose recent film Naan Than Bala is doing well besides getting good reviews, once fasted for 48 days praying for the recovery of Ajith who had been admitted to a hospital at that time for his recurring back-ache and a surgery.

Ajith and Vivek share excellent rapport among themselves and have starred in films such as Kadhal Mannan, Vaali, Mugavari, Poovellam Un Vaasam, Unnai Thedi, Aalwar and Kireedom. The duo would be seen together after a long time in Ajith’s upcoming Gautham Menon starrer Sathya. During the shoot of the film, Vivek revealed his affection for Ajith and how he fasted once for 48 days praying for Ajith’s recovery.

When Ajith was shooting for Unnai Thedi, he was undergoing severe back-ache and still shot for the film neglecting the pain. However, as doctors advised him to go for a surgery at once, Ajith was admitted and operated upon. It was a tough surgery as a hole was made in the front side of Ajith’s neck and even as the surgery was performed on the back. Few individuals would have come out successfully out of such surgeries.

Vivek, who wanted Ajith to recover soon, prayed to Lord Muruga and underwent fasting for 48 days. When Ajith recovered and started acting in films, nobody was happier than Vivek, who revealed this only recently saying “I did so only for the friendship I share with Ajith and didn’t want to reveal it; now that it has come to light, I’m only happy that Ajith is doing fine and I’m starring in his 55th film with him!”

Manjapai Movie Review

Manjapai Movie Review
Cast: Vimal, Lakshmi Menon, Rajkiran, Anu Anand, Ashvin Raja
Banner: Thirupathi Brothers
Direction: Naveen Raghavan
Production: N. Subash Chandrabose, A. Sargunam, Nandha Kumar
Music: M Ghibran

Storyline:
Debutante director Naveen Raghavan’s ‘Manjapai‘ shows what is true affection and the difference between the live styles of city and village.

Tamizh (Vimal) lost his parents during his childhood. He was brought up by his Grandfather Venkatasamy (Rajkiran). Tamizh studies well and gets in to IT industry in Chennai. He lives alone in his apartment.

He meets medical student Karthika (Lakshmi Menon) on road and falls for her instantly. Though she is not showing any interest towards him he successfully persuades her to reciprocate his love.

Thamizh gets a chance to go to US and settle there. The coveted offer depends on a project given to him. He takes up the challenge and work meticulously. Since he is likely to go to US within three months he wants to bring his grandpa to his house and live with him for some time.

The grandpa, a typical village man, comes to the city. His encounters with the city and its culture create many funny and touching incidents.

The affectionate and innocent old man goes around and creates many ripples in the lives of the persons he comes across. Each and every incident has the stamp of his innocence, affection, and courage. Some get irritated and some get touched by his affectionate ad raw way of doing things.

Unfortunately the innocent grandpa unintentionally creates many problems to Tamizh, who is not willing to condemn his grandpa. The troubles continue but Thamizh is least bothered. But grandpa’s overtures go to the extent of making him loose the onsite offer and creating strains in his relationship with Karthika.

At a point Thamizh loses his patience and shouts at his grandpa. The old man realizes his mistakes and tries to make amends. Things take a bizarre turn when a child eats poisoned food and the blame falls on him.

The climax tells us what happened to grandpa and his relationship with Thamizh.

Script analysis
Director Naveen Raghavan has honestly attempted to depict the basic difference between city and rural culture. He firmly stands on grandpa’s side and makes a sharp comment on the way people are living in a cosmopolitan city.

The way the village old man encounters the city has been depicted with lot of fun. Some of the scenes are quite touching (ex: helping the orphanage and the pregnant girl etc). The bondage between Thamizh and his grandfather has been beautifully portrayed.

The director has made some strong point in favour of family values and bondage by showing the hero compromising everything and losing anything for the sake of his grandpa.

The scenes emphatic but it is hard to digest why Thamizh never tries to make his grandpa understand the dynamics of the city. He could have understood that his grandpa would be misfit in the city and that he would cause some unnecessary troubles to everyone.

Any youngster who is affectionate with his previous generation would try to help them to come to terms with the reality. Thamizh never does it. This aspect of the film is very weak and unconvincing. The movie could have been more effective if the director paid attention to this aspect. The city Vs village aspect has been handled in a stereotypical manner.

The romance angle could have been lot better. The US embassy sequence looks as a silly episode.

The stereotype scenes however, provides for interesting viewing as they have been dealt with some fun.

Performances:
The movie revolves around Rajkiran and the man does full justice to the role. He handles the role that offers much scope to perform well. He stands out with his outstanding performance.

Vimal manages to make his presence felt in a script that gives more important to another character.

Lakshmi Menon has gained weight and lost some of her charm. However, her acting skills have improved.

Gibran’s music is competent. A couple of songs create deep impact.
Masani’s camera work is just about okay.

Positive points
Fun filled and touchy narrative
Performance by Rajkiran
Music

Negative points
Stereotype portrayal of village and city
Lack of credibility in the developments
Predictable final portions

Verdict:
‘Manjapai’ is a symbol of village and its inherent innocence. The movie with this title does work despite some flaws as it has interesting narrative.
Manjapai: manages to entertain.

Un Samayal Arayil Movie Review

Un Samayal Arayil Movie Review
Cast: Prakash Raj, Sneha, Urvashi
Direction, Screenplay and Production: Prakash Raj
Written by: Viji, T. Gnanavel
Music: Ilaiyaraaja
Cinematography: Preetha

Un Samayal Arayil is a thoroughly enjoyable light romantic comedy set in the backdrop of an intense passion and love for food and cooking

Storyline:
Un Samayal Arayil (in your kitchen) fittingly deals with the passion for food that leads to other passions in life. Kalidasan (Prakash Raj) is a middle-aged archaeologist. He is a bachelor. He lives with a distant relative Vaidhi (Kumaravel) and his cook Krishna (Thambi Ramaiah). He is simply mad about food. He would go any distance to get the food he likes.

He comes across Gowri (Sneha), a dubbing artist through a wrong call. Gowri too is fond of food and the fondness has its roots in her deep attachment towards her deceased mother, who was a great cook. Gowri, past her thirties stays single.

The relationship between the two starts through a wrong call but develops smoothly thanks to their commonness in passion for food. After several exchanges over the phone, they decide to meet. Both are excited about the meeting but some unwarranted complex make things take strange turns.

Affected by some complex over their appearances both decide to send proxies to create a better impression. Kalidasan sends his nephew, Naveen (Tejus) and Gowri sends her roommate, Meghana (Samyuktha Hornad) to their first meeting.

These youngsters pretend to be Kalidasan and Gowri. It leads to a lot of confusion which leads to an emotional climax.

Script review:
Based on Malayalam super hit movie Salt N’ Pepper, Un Samayal Arayil offers a refreshing feast based on unique taste towards food and relationship. The passion for food is just a form of passion for finer things in life.

Both lead characters fittingly reflect this phenomenon and provide us with a rare treat to enjoy the finer aspects of life and relationships.

The drama that unfolds between the two strangers has been told in an interesting and poetic manner. The way things getting complicated too has been smoothly conveyed through some good writing and acting.

Director Prakash Raj scores in executing a delicate story with ease. His approach is sensitive. Being as entertainer himself, he hasn’t missed the entertainment aspect. The movie is balance with emotions and comical moments.

The scenes leading to the climax are too long to relish. The way the love develops seems to be surreal. The feel good element works well but just like too much of sweetness would make a negative impact to a good feast, the overtly feel good factor has its negative impact on the overall experience.

The subplot and the entry of a villain are unwarranted.

Performances:
Prakash Raj and Sneha have done an impressive work. Their acting is equally important to the script and dialogues. Sneha looks refreshing.

Others including Kumarvel, Thambi Ramaiah, Tejas and Samyuktha Hornad have done their respective parts well.

Ilaiyaraja’s amazing background score in among the plus points for the movie. A couple of songs are enjoyable.

Cinematographer Preetha had proved herself in Abhiyum Naanum. She surpasses her own standards to give us a visual treat. The way she captures the delicious dishes, tender moments is commendable.

Positive points
Story and script
Acting
Music
Cinematography
Poignant moments
Sensitive handling

Negative points
Subplot and villain
Dragging second half
Too much of feel good affect the taste

Verdict
The movie is a different fare with a solid script told in a sensitive manner. It works well despite some dragging and deviation.
Un Samayal Arayil: Delicious treat

Nobody can stop me from shooting, Anjali assures her producers

Actress Anjali has assured the producers of her films which are under production and wannabe producers who want to sign her up in their films that there would be no problem whatsoever during the shooting schedule. “Nobody can stop the shooting schedules of my films,” the actress said.

Anjali was replying, albeit indirectly, to the threat meted out by film-maker Kalanjiyam who said a few days back that he won’t allow Anjali shoot for any of her films unless she completed his Oor Suttri Puranam as the film’s shoot has been held up because of her absence. Soon after Kalanjiyam’s interview appeared in the media, Anjali has come out with her statement.

“My problems have been over for good. I have successfully completed the shoot of a Telugu film which would be releasing shortly; my next assignment would be a Kannada film whose shoot is going on at present. Acting is my profession and I could only laugh at claims made by someone that I won’t be allowed to shoot for any of my film. Nobody can stop me from shooting for my films.

The industry knows that I’m innocent and is supporting me on the issue. I assure my producers not to worry about any threat as I’m always fully committed to my profession,” Anjali’s statement said.

Kalanjiyam, who launched Oor Suttri Puranam with Anjali as a heroine, hasn’t completed the film which couldn’t proceed beyond 12 days of shoot. Anjali hasn’t responded to his calls to shoot for the film after she accused him and Aunt Barathi Devi of conniving to rob her of all her properties.
