Comedy King’ Goundamani turned 75 yesterday (18th March). The comedian, who is widely believed by many as the best-ever comedian to have emerged out of Kollywood in the past century, is ranked along with legendary comedians such as N.S. Krishnan, Chandrababu, Nagesh and Thangavelu. Goundamani happens to be the only one among them whose style of comedy appeals to all age group from 06-65.
Hailing from Vanakundapuram Village near Coimbatore, Goundamani was born as Subramani. He used to give ‘counter’ (reply) at once to all those who starred along him in his early days. This earned him the tag of ‘Counter’ and he came to be known as Counter Mani which, in later days, naturally became Goundamani. The name became very famous and Goundamani stuck to this name.
Goundamani was in his 30’s when he debuted as comedian in superstar Rajinikanth’s 16 Vayadhinile in the mid-seventies. He went on to star in many films and remained as the undisputed ‘No.1’ comedian for the next 25 years till he started taking break on his own from the early part of the last decade. Goundamani-Senthil combination, known as the ‘Laurel-Hardy of Kollywood’, was instrumental in the success of many films.
Goundamani held his own against the likes of superstar Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan and used to steal the show from under heroes such as Prabhu, Sathyaraj, Karthik, Sarathkumar, etc. After a long break, he is now starring in films such as Vaaimai and 49-O. He plays prominent roles in both the films. Let’s wish him a belated happy birthday and pray for many more years of comedy act from him!
