Rajinikanth: There can be only one Baashha

Superstar Rajinikanth has ruled out starring in sequel to Baashha and has said that the film’s ‘magic’ would be lost if a sequel is attempted. Released in 1995, Baashha is still considered as a ‘cult’ film by many film-makers who have made vain attempts to make similar films.

Baashha was not only one of Rajini’s most successful films in his career but it was also a film which created a major turn-around in the State’s politics. The film did very well in Kerala and did even better in its Telugu dubbed version, bettering the box-office records of many direct Telugu films. Even after 19 years of the film’s release, people still sit glued to the television whenever the film is screened.

R.M. Veerappan, who produced the film, refused to give permission to the many producers who tried to remake the film. Vijay’s Bagavathy and Sarath Kumar’s Arasu were some of the films made in Baashha-style but failed to court success at the box-office the way Baashha fared.

Suresh Krissna, who made Baashha, approached Rajini with the plan of making a sequel. Rajini, who heard the one-line script, told Suresh Krishna that he was not sure that the sequel would be as successful as the original. Speaking to Jaya TV recently, Rajini was asked by Vivek about his plans to make a sequel to Baashha.

“In Tamil cinema, there can be only one Baashha; the sequel, if it is ever made, won’t have the same kind of ‘magic’ woven by the first one. As such, I don’t plan to star in the sequel to the film,” was Rajini’s reply. The interview is likely to be relayed by Jaya TV on Tamil new year day.
